A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
