The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
