Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
