Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
